What Exactly Is “VLM” Carpet Cleaning?

VLM is a different way to clean carpet using a floor buffer, like this small Oreck Orbiter machine

When it comes to professional carpet cleaning, there are two main methods that are used: hot water extraction (HWE) and very low moisture (VLM) cleaning.

Each method has its own benefits and drawbacks, which is why it’s important to understand the differences before you decide what kind of carpet cleaning business to start.

VLM or “very low moisture” carpet cleaning involves spraying a cleaning chemical onto the carpet fibers, then scrubbing the carpet fibers with a floor buffer.

The VLM cleaning solution will help the carpet fibers release dirt, soil, and stains. Those contaminants are suspended in the cleaning solution, then whisked away using an absorbent cleaning pad or “bonnet.”

Some people think very low moisture cleaning is a relatively new method that is growing in popularity. That’s actually not true! VLM has been around for decades. It’s even been used by some big franchises (maybe you’ve heard of ChemDry?).

These days, many carpet cleaners are choosing to start up with VLM instead of steam cleaning. Why? Because it’s cheaper! You can save thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in startup costs by choosing VLM equipment over steam cleaning equipment.

Does “Very Low Moisture” Carpet Cleaning Work As Well As Steam Cleaning?

VLM carpet cleaning is very effective. In fact, many carpet cleaners are choosing to start VLM businesses instead of steam cleaning these days!

Some people falsely believe that VLM doesn’t work as well as steam cleaning. That simply isn’t true.

VLM can be just as effective as steam cleaning at removing stains and improving the appearance of your customers’ carpets. It also helps remove contaminants from your carpet fibers, which can improve indoor air quality.

So why does this myth persist? Personally, I think steam cleaners are responsible.

Steam cleaners often feel threatened by VLM cleaners. Or they try to “educate” their customers about the dangers of hiring a VLM cleaner. But those are all misguided efforts, and I think they come from a place of insecurity.

Again, the truth is that VLM carpet cleaning has been around for decades. It’s used by thousands of carpet cleaners across the planet. The VLM method is still popular today because it works.

Why Did I Start VLMtraining.com?

VLM Training is a website for you to learn how to perform VLM carpet cleaning, start a VLM business, and prosper.

I started this website to help anybody start a carpet cleaning business quickly, easily, and for as little up-front investment as possible.

VLM is the perfect method for “starting up” cheaply.

Why?

Because you can buy most of the VLM carpet cleaning equipment you need for under $1,000 on the internet at places like Amazon, Craigslist, etc.

Compare that to steam cleaning, where you’ll need to spend thousands on a portable extractor – or tens of thousands for a truckmount steam cleaning unit!

This website is intended to help the little guy/gal:

  • The weekend hustler who wants to get into carpet cleaning
  • The technician who is tired of working for a boss and wants to strike out on their own
  • The full service cleaner who wants to add VLM to their services
  • The white collar employee looking to escape the rat race
  • Or even a grizzled old steam cleaner who’s looking to change his ways 😉
